We took a side trip to Virginia City - the old mining city of Bonanza fame. (Though the real Virginia City never was in the show!) It was, however, the richest city in the west when they discovered the Comstock load. There are miles and miles of mines underneath the city.
It's a pretty barren environment, with a few mines and other operations still going.
They had a cool little fire museum full of old fire trucks:
And then our final stop was a bookstore, where grandma read to Maria (with a little audience in the background).
